Weds 01 Sept – Sun 17 Oct 2021
In 2021 Iraq participated for the first time in the Venice Architecture Biennale, with Rashad Salim’s project Ark Re-imagined. The 'Expeditionary Pavilion’ returns to the origins of Iraq’s architectural legacy, celebrating the vernacular architecture, watercraft, and ecology of the Tigris-Euphrates river system. Salim’s expeditionary art practice engages artisans and interdisciplinary co-researchers to explore traditional boat-building, architecture and craft practices – on the brink of extinction after decades of conflict, climate change and most recently COVID-19.
6 Oct 2021
A symposium examining the role that architecture could play in addressing the challenges of displacement and reconstruction. Moderated by: Hashim Sarkis, Curator of the 17th International Architecture Exhibition with Rashad Salim (Panel 2: Post war reconstructions in the Arab World) and George Richards (Panel 3: Restoration of Craft, Restoration through Craft)
24 Oct 2021
The American environmental artist Agnes Denes raises her flag, 'The Future is Fragile, Handle with Care' on a simple wooden pole in the Venice Lagoon as a cultural call to action for planetary health. Filmed at TBA21–Academy’s Ocean Space during Territorial Agency: Oceans in Transformation and Cinema Galleggiante (Floating Cinema) - Acque Sconosciute (Unknown Waters).
